Boating and fishing
New Zealanders are well-known for their love affair with the sea, and the Bay of Islands is arguably the best place in the country to find out why. Sailing, fishing, diving, snorkelling, kayaking, waterskiing and many other watersports can all be enjoyed here in magnificent surroundings.
Boating facilities at Mountain Landing
Many watersports can be enjoyed directly from Mountain Landing. A 28-foot rigid hull inflatable, The Protector, is permanently based at the property. The Protector can be booked year round for skippered half and full day fishing and sightseeing trips.
Residents’ own boats can also be valeted, maintained and stored as required.
A boat ramp, jetty and wash-down facilities are located at the eastern end of Wairoa Bay. Another boat ramp is proposed for further along Wairoa Bay.
Resident charter boat Libertas II
Luxury 60-foot charter sport fishing boat Libertas II is based at nearby Opua Marina every summer from January to April. She is available for priority use by Mountain Landing residents, and can be chartered for sightseeing, fishing and diving trips.
Libertas II sleeps four guests for overnight excursions, which can range from a single night to extended five-night trips.
Sailing, fishing and dive charters
When Libertas II is not in residence, other sport fishing boats can be chartered from nearby Russell and Paihia. Renowned fishing and diving spots include the nearby Cavalli Islands and the more remote Three Kings Islands.
Anyone from the novice to the highly experienced enthusiast can try their hand at reeling in marlin, swordfish, tuna and shark. There is also spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving to be enjoyed in the area, including wreck diving and diving in season for scallops and crayfish.
Day or overnight charter sailing trips are also available and can similarly cater for any level of experience and interest. Scenic itineraries range from the sheltered waters of the dozens of local islands to the towering cliffs and spectacular waterfalls of Whangaroa Harbour.
