Location

Mountain Landing is situated at the tip of the Purerua Peninsula in the Bay of Islands, located in the far north of New Zealand’s North Island. Known as the ‘winterless north’, the area is famed for its long sunshine hours, world-class boating, diving and fishing and abundance of fresh produce.

The Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a paradise for sailors, with more than 144 islands dotted along its coast and hundreds of miles of secluded white-sand beaches and harbours to explore. A natural playground for watersports of all kinds, the area offers some of the best deep-sea and big-game fishing in the world.

The main towns in the Bay of Islands are Kerikeri, Waitangi, Paihia and Russell. The closest to Mountain Landing by road is the pretty heritage town of Kerikeri, half an hour’s drive away, with the others just 15 minutes away by boat.

Historical significance

The Bay of Islands is regarded as the birthplace of modern New Zealand, since it was here that European settlement first began in 1814. The Treaty of Waitangi, the historic agreement with the indigenous Maori people that made New Zealand a colony of Great Britain, was signed at Waitangi in 1840. There are a number of important heritage sites on the Mountain Landing property, which have been preserved as part of the development.
