January 2010

With another summer now well underway, we’re pleased to have welcomed the first guests to our newest Residence, the Gabriel Residence. Completed in mid-2009, the Gabriel Residence and its grounds make up a 5.5-acre section above Wairoa Bay, shown on the master plan as Sites 5 & 6.

Together with The Boathouse, the Gabriel Residence is now being let as part of the Residences at Mountain Landing luxury accommodation experience.

Sleeping four and eight respectively, these two Residences have already hosted several groups of guests this season. Both Residences are now available for booking through our Hospitality Director, Sarah Hull, at Cooper and Company.

The Cooper Residence on Site 3 is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion in time for the Rugby World Cup, to be held in New Zealand in the second half of 2011.

Gabriel Residence ‘a very special place’

The Gabriel Residence is a simple, modern building reminiscent of New Zealand farm buildings. It consists of two parallel gabled structures, constructed primarily in unfinished hardwood and raw concrete, that nestle into the slope of the land.

It was designed by Pip Cheshire, the master plan architect for Mountain Landing, who also designed The Boathouse.

Owner Steve Gabriel has enjoyed spending time in the new house since its completion:

“We’re really delighted with the house. It’s comfortable and practical as well as beautiful – the perfect place to come back to after a day out on the boat. The views, the peace and the Mountain Landing environment all make this a very special place to get away to.”

Kiwi and other birdlife flourishing

With a thriving kiwi population now well established at Mountain Landing, a number of visitor groups have recently been on kiwi-spotting night walks. These have all been successful expeditions, with each group spotting (and hearing – these birds can be very noisy!) kiwi hunting and feeding in their natural habitat.

The flightless kiwi is still highly endangered in New Zealand, but growing numbers of predator-proofed bird sanctuary areas like Mountain Landing are seeing kiwi numbers gradually increase again around the country.

Our pateke (native brown teal) are also settled in and doing well in their new home. Twelve breeding pairs were introduced to Mountain Landing in April by the Department of Conservation as part of a pateke regeneration programme. Their movements will continue to be tracked and monitored by DOC staff over the coming months.
