It’s officially the start of spring at Mountain Landing and the days here in the Far North are getting noticeably longer. Warmer weather will soon be on the way and then we’ll see a abundance of lush spring growth right across the peninsula.
Over the winter there’s been significant progress on our ongoing planting programme. A total of 21,500 new trees have been planted this season, including 15,800 from Mountain Landing’s own nursery. These have included pohutukawa, puriri, karaka, nikau, kahikatea, titoki, kauri, lacebark, whitey wood, manuka, toetoe, cabbage tree, harakeke (flax) and sedge grasses, all New Zealand natives.
The main areas planted include the area around Site 3, where the Cooper Residence is now under construction, the vineyard entrance, the area around Sites 7 and 8 and the main entrance gate. There has also been considerable planting along roadsides, walkways and wetland areas. Another 14,000 trees and shrubs are planned for planting along the eastern edge of the Te Puna wetlands as the ground gets drier in spring.
Over the winter the boardwalks around the Te Puna Valley have also been upgraded and widened and seating has been built in strategic spots right across the walking track network, ideal for sitting and watching the birdlife or enjoying the view.
Construction is currently underway on the first two homes of The Residences at Mountain Landing. Building is well advanced on the Gabriel Residence on Site 5, with structural concreting complete, windows being installed and the roof nearly finished. The house is expected to be fully enclosed by mid-September, two weeks ahead of schedule, and is due for completion in 2009.
Building has also recently begun on the Cooper Residence on Site 3. This four-suite home (plus six-bed bunkroom) will form the heart of The Residences at Mountain Landing. Due for completion in 2010, it will include a spa, gymnasium, catering kitchen, games room, wine cellar and large living areas for the use of all Residences guests. Together the Gabriel and Cooper Residences will offer accommodation for 22 people.
